![]() ![]() ![]() Hiring skilful individualsĪs a Life Science recruiter, I mainly work with Biotech, Pharmaceutical, Medical Devices, Diagnostics and Food (Science) companies. Now that we have a clear understanding of what a competency is, let’s get into my favourite subject in the world: recruitment, and why competency-based hiring is relevant. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to implement a competency-based organisational model within their company. If you want the nitty, gritty detail about competence, competency, and the difference between the two, I will refer you to the 251 pages of “ The handbook of competency mapping” by Seema Sanghi. These are behaviour, aptitude & personal characteristics. For the sake of readability of this article, I will focus mainly on three aspects of competency that, in my experience, companies find hard to manage. In one of the HR bibles on this topic, written by Seema Sanghi, it is stated as follows “ competence means a skill and the standard of performance reached, while competency refers to the behaviour by which it is achieved”. What is competency-based hiring, or better still, what is a competency? To understand competency, we must first make a definition of competence. ![]()
